Cronicle

I use hcio to monitor a few of my backup scripts and when LLMs hit the scene I got interested to try to build my own. I have a pretty good understanding of systems, and I enjoy thinking through them, but I’m not a great front-end designer - AI has helped a bit in that regard. Cronicle isn’t live anywhere yet, and it’s undergone a few revisions already. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with it, but I’m having fun thinking through it.

Travel Entertainment For Kids

We are quickly becomming a Great Wolf Lodge family… we’ve got several times over the last couple years, and I only forsee more going forward for the next 5-8 years or so. We also travel to see family every now and then and so when we do I’m in charge of kid’s entertainment… Normally we use a simple setup for each kid that basically consists of an old android phone with syncthing and VLC… In my homelab I host an instance of tdarr which is a tool batch processing media files - say you have a folder of tv shows encoded in h.264 and you want to re-encode to h.265 for space savings - tdarr is a great tool. So what I do is configure a “library” in tdarr (basically a folder of media), and then I hand-select the tv shows or movies the kids might want for the trip into that folder. tdarr compresses the media quite a bit and then that folder is also the syncthing back-end so the compressed media is just automatically updated and synced to the phones when on our home network. This has allowed me…

homelab-computer-vision-pipelines

Done in 11 seconds! Subtitle and audio files are in the outputs folder. I wanted to talk through an idea I have for some computer vision pipelines at home. I heard of a tool called Roboflow, which is like a no-code computer vision pipeline training and inference tool. It seems very cool. I also use Frigate at home, and Frigate supports lots of detection on the NVR side. And so deploying a model in Frigate or using Roboflow, depending on what kind of customization you would need, you can have these detections potentially be as accurate as you want, at least with Roboflow. The thing is, I don’t know about Frigate, but my ideas are if I have a model at home that knows me and my wife and my children by name, then when monitored areas issue detections, for example, say I’m in the backyard and the temperature is above 80 degrees, have a home assistant kick on a sprinkler system or something like that. And if my wife is back there and it’s 80 degrees, don’t do that because she wouldn’t want t…

The Importance of Nostr According to ChatGPT

Disclaimer # This was written by ChatGPT with zero oversight from me. There are a few things that are not 100% accurate, but the main idea is there… I am hoping to actually write about my experience with nostr as I get more involved on the platform. The Power of the Decentralized Social Media Platform Nostr: A Guide for Beginners # Social media has become a cornerstone of modern communication, allowing individuals to connect across borders and share ideas instantly. However, traditional platforms have raised concerns about censorship, data privacy, and the monopolistic control of user-generated content. Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays), a decentralized social media protocol, offers a revolutionary alternative by emphasizing freedom, privacy, and user autonomy. This essay explores the transformative power of Nostr, why it matters, and provides a practical guide for beginners to get started. The Power of Decentralization: Why Nostr Matters # At its core, Nostr is a dec…

Interesting IPs between Jellyfin clients and server depending on tailscale and server address

When connecting from my phone to jellyfin I’m seeing some interesting patterns. Scenarios # Tailscale IP of phone is listed as local network to jellyfin # Wifi: off Tailscale: on Use exit node: on LAN access: on Jellyfin: LAN IP Jellyfin sees 192.168.1.1, my router address Wifi: off tailscale: on Use exit node: on LAN access: on Jellyfin: Tailscale magic DNS Jellyfin sees the docker bridge network Q: This might be because of traefik somehow Wifi: off tailsacale: on Use exit node: on LAN access: off Jellyfin: LAN IP Jellyfin sees the 192.168.1.1 Q: Why did this work even work? Kanboard to keep me focused on my own ideas

TL;DR # I’ve been using kanboard as a self-hosted kanban board. It’s keeping me focused on Digital Harbor when I’d rather be doing something less productive. My TODOs # Here’s the thing about my TODOs… they’re everywhere. I’ve tried a crazy amount of different organizational tactics for my todo items. I’ve tried post-it notes, a journal, in specific repos, a master repo, todo CLIs, etc… The problem for me was consistency… I would regularly forget what I was using for TODOs at that moment in my life… was there a todo file in this project? Do I have a todo repo cloned on this computer? Is this stuff in my journal or on post-it notes? And what do I do with new ideas? Do I organize them centrally or use a repo for the idea I have? It was getting out of hand to a debilitating degree… For a while I just gave up on being organized at all… Things would get done as necessary and if I got some motivation to work on something it was immediately smothered with the anxiety of how I was going to org…
