When I Learned What An Escape Room Was

When I Learned What An Escape Room Was

Set The Stage # I was recently diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. I’ve written about it and will plan to write more. As of August 22, 2025 the only published piece is Autism ADHD and the Doshas. This story will recount one of many events in my life that in hindsight were clear-cut examples of how my brain consumes and understands reality differently than neuro-typical people… Story Time # When I was 24ish I was working at a summer camp as the head of guy’s staff (camp consellors). It was typical for the leadership team to get together the week before the camp to get to know each other if we didn’t, plan activities, etc. For team building the plan was to go to Chattanooga and do an escape room. I had never heard of an escape room before and I am not being hyperbolic or obtuse when I tell you that my first thought was of a dungeon. I was told “you get locked into a room” and I asked “are you tied up?”. I’m a little surprised the ridiculousness of that question didn’t prompt more conversatio…

Liquids vs Liquid and How My Wife Forgot I was Autistic

Liquids vs Liquid and How My Wife Forgot I was Autistic

A Comical Story My wife said a somewhat rhetorical question yesterday “is it liquid or liquids when…” and I frankly don’t remember the exact ending. I thought it was a curious statement so I launched into my own explanation… \*_Liquids vs Liquid_ Liquid is used regardless of the quantity of a single liquid, or if you are referring to a combination of different liquids that group together in a similar way… So if you had a lot of apple juice, you could say “that’s a lot of liquid”, and if you had apple juice and orange juice, you could still say “that’s a lot of liquid” because the “liquid” isn’t the specific kind of juice here, it’s the amount of juice. She cut me off right at the end to lovingly comment I forgot for a second that you were autistic.

Autism ADHD and the Doshas

Introduction I was recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1 and ADHD, the inattentive type. I suppose, AuDHD for short. There are many reasons why I now have this official label of AuDHD, not that I was hoping for it, but due to a childhood behavioral disorder diagnosis and a desire to understand myself better, I decided to start considering that something in my childhood issue was misunderstood. Note But what started as simply considering some new diagnosis turned into a larger worldview shift when it comes to medicine and how we treat people for things we label disorderly. Personal History # A brief history lesson for context is that I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but not specifically type 1 or type 2. This diagnosis came about two times, once in my late childhood and again when I was 19. The diagnosis never made a ton of sense to me, but it seemed to almost match some of the things that my mom specifically was concerned about. There is another point for later…
