💭 Docker | Atuin Docs
Note Here’s my thought on Docker | Atuin Docs A 2-fer… So I want to host atuin and share shell history across my machines on my tailnet I think… it’s such a nice interface but I barely use it so I’m sure the features will improve some aspects of my life. And secondly, this section on using systemd is interesting… I hadn’t thought to use systemd to schedule container upgrades - sounds incredibly trivial and probably a widely practiced thing now that I say it out loud… Saving here for implementing something… sometime… Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. 💭 You already have a git server: (Maurycy’s blog)
Note Here’s my thought on You already have a git server: (Maurycy’s blog) Using my server’s filesystem + ssh + git-hooks for the simplest self-hosted CI pipelines ever sounds like a pretty cool setup. 💭 uv script management
Note Here’s my thought on uv script management Dang Waylon! Love these few lines… uv is great, been using it for environment and project requirements management but I didn’t realize it was this easy to setup a pep 723 compliant script! Love this sed -i '1i #!/usr/bin/env -S uv run --script' little gem too - I typically do uv run script.py so I’ll see about making this a simple zsh alias for faster iteration on python scripts… I often have AI write quick bash scripts to accomplish things, but it’s quite a bit harder for me to read than python, and with the power uv is bringing to the python ecosystem, maybe it’s fine to just be a little higher in the programming stack for script-kitty stuff Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. 💭 Engineering excellence starts on edge
Note Here’s my thought on Engineering excellence starts on edge I have become a huge DHH fan, maybe that means I’m just a basic bish but as I’ve become aware of who he has I haven’t yet disagreed with much that he has to say… And fortunately or unfortuntaely that remanins true with this post about getting involved “at the edge”. I feel like I bounce between “give me bleeding edge” and “give me unshakable stability” on the daily, and there’s probably a time and place for both… I think I am prone to take on initial viewpoints and so I don’t want to abandon my desire for stability, but man… maybe running Arch wouldn’t be that bad, maybe a release-candidate container for an app at home here or there would be an interesting way to give back even a fraction to the FOSS community. I try to open issues on GH and such when things happen, but I could take a more proactive approach especially with the software that I use more regularly… Thanks DHH for posting these thoughts, keep em coming! 💭 Codeberg Pages | Codeberg Documentation
Note Here’s my thought on Codeberg Pages | Codeberg Documentation Forgejo has a github pages like feature… this might be nice to use sometime as I try to lean into forgejo, but the last thought/bookmark on using traefik + nginx in a compose stack feels simple too. I’ll keep it in mind as I explore the forgejo setup at home After reading it again I missed something. Codeberg pages is not exactly like github pages, seems more like the github readme thing - you have to use a repo called “pages” and then you’ll get {username}.codeberg.page… so they own this TLD, and so I’m not sure it’s worth exploring this for homelab situations when traefik + nginx or something is pretty simple as well Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. Note Here’s my thought on Setting up a Self-Hosted Forgejo Actions Runner with Docker Compose — Linus Groh As I explore forgjeo this post has a title that sounds very promising! I would like everything to be a docker compose stack for now and I’m struggling a bit with the runner installation - I might be over-complicating it but some parts of the docs aren’t as clear as I want them to be - hopefully this post is a good supplement EDIT: I’ve read through this - it’s definitely older than forgejo docs on compose, but I like the setup better… It’s more of what I would’ve guessed whereas the official docs have a dind image being used it looks like to proxy the tcp traffic from the runner through to a docker engine running in a containerized environment… now that I say it out loud maybe I do like that better… regardless, looking forward to having some self-hosted actions running before EOD Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. 💭 Static egress IPs for machines - Fresh Produce - Fly.io
Note Here’s my thought on Static egress IPs for machines - Fresh Produce - Fly.io I’m starting to setup litestream for replicating sqlite dbs of my apps to my self-hosted MinIO instance… only issue is most of my networking assumes client connectivity via tailscale so I whitelist pretty much every accessible domain. This has gotten me in trouble once or twice, and I’m currently in the throws of backing up sqlite from fly.io. The easiest solution for me would be to add egress IP cidr blocks to my traefik whitelisting configuration and wouldn’t ya know it - in september 2024 fly.io released the ability to set static egress IPs! 💭 The Remarkable Incompetence At The Heart Of Tech
Note Here’s my thought on The Remarkable Incompetence At The Heart Of Tech What a great post… the majority of my tech experience has been at a large non-tech company and this just couldn’t be more true… we’ve got folks who made 150k+ in just cash salary who would take 3 months to learn what a firewall rule even was… I heard at one time there were 6 different salesforce accounts across 3 different cloud providers… The incompetence in management, new-hires, those in charge of hiring, etc. is just mind-boggling. I have been fortunate to have generally awesome peers and helpful direct managers but generally I see every ounce of truth in this article… but what does it matter? I kind of think it doesn’t… there’s nothing I or anyone can do to change this wide-spread problem… companies will throw money at other companies while employing dozens (if not more) of engineers who think Excel is Big Data… overall great read, much respect Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. 💭 It’s rude to show AI output to people | Alex Martsinovich
Note Here’s my thought on It’s rude to show AI output to people | Alex Martsinovich Great read on LLM output, and the slop that’s already been dumped into the internet. I’ve become a pretty heavy AI user - mostly for code and then thoughts organization. With code (that matters) I review everything AI makes. When I ask gemma3 via ollama to organize my thoughts, I reiterate the importance in my prompt to not re-word things, but to just organize and then help me work through whatever I’m working through in the post. I’ve generated a blog post or 2 with AI only, and it’s still relatively clear to me when AI writes vs when a human writes. This post does a good job of highlighting how 1. this is a hilariously old sci-fi problem (there’s nothing new under the sun, ammirite?) 2. how AI is a useful tool and 3. how in the age of AI we’re still actually just battling other humans…. but humans are simple creatures in a lot of ways - we take the path of least resistance the vast majority of the time, and LLM sloppy output that looks not shitty is certainly a low-resistance path to a post or commit… but was the post or commit worth anything? without proof of thought - no. 💭 Tyblog | systemd has been a complete, utter, unmitigated success
Note Here’s my thought on Tyblog | systemd has been a complete, utter, unmitigated success I found this post on systemd this morning, and although I’ve been a Linux user for around 6 years now, there’s some levels of it that are pretty foreign to me. One of the things I never got was the drama around systemd - but that’s because I wasn’t around in the beforefore times, I don’t use cron THAT MUCH, and I’ve only had to setup a few systemd unit files - not enough to generate a real opinion on it. But lately I’m looking into more automation at home - and some stuff is fun to put into an overkill of a platform for a homelab, like temporal, but some stuff should probably be run in more hardened ways (backups for example) - so getting a little download this morning on systemd from a clearly seasoned Linux user is a nice addition to my hot cup of coffee.

💭 restic · Backups done right!
Note Here’s my thought on restic · Backups done right! Welp, I need to be backing up my desktop home directory, specifically a directory of docker volume data… I thought duplicati made sense, but that mostly targets cloud-based backends, and rsync is great but I wasn’t sure how i wanted to manage the job. Through a little AI chat I learned about restic and am working on a compose stack to run restic in a container to regularly backup my home directory via sftp to my NAS to then be swept up in my NAS backup workflow Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. Note Here’s my thought on Add confirmation for hard reset by stefanhaller · Pull Request #4704 · jesseduffield/lazygit I float between lazygit and gitui still for my terminal-based git flow and I want to lean into lazygit more fully. One issue is that the keybinding for lazygit brings up a menu there the first option is to nuke the entire working tree… in gitui this just resets the one file that’s highlighted in the TUI. So that’s obviously 100% my fault, however it’s nice to see this PR open for adding confirmation for this potential blunder that has cost me several uncommitted scripts and changes… Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. 💭 HomeBox
Note Here’s my thought on HomeBox I stumbled onto homebox this morning scrolling a newsletter and it looks like something I’ve been lightly thinking about for a while. I have wanted a way to track all the things in my house, but I haven’t given it enough thought to come up with the specific manner in which to do it. I’ve seen other asset trackers but today this one excited me. I spun it up at home quick and it looks great - It’ll take quite a lot of time to fill it out but here’s a few features I love out of the gate: the default setup seems very useful - pre-populated locations and tags for cataloging assets reduces the barrier to entry for me it’s pretty nice lookin there’s a label generator including qr codes that take you to the record in your homebox… I had an idea for something like this a while ago - qr codes to link to instructions for things around the house (like cleaning the oven or something). So it’s neat to see that similar idea played out in another more useful way! Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. I picked this up from Waylon Walker(https://thoughts.waylonwalker.com). Note Here’s my thought on TimoStahl/kanboard_plugin_bigboard: A Kanboard that can display multiple projects I use kanboard to keep myself focused at home - it’s great because it’s simple enough but does have complex features (that I largely don’t need). It’s got a great REST API for integrations and looks decent. Well today I discovered “plugins” for it - and those make it even better - tis BigBoard plugin gives me a way better view of my projects, letting me minimize the ones I don’t need to look at “right now” but not using any weird search filters or anything - a simple intuitive “big board” of my projects and their subsequent tasks. Note Here’s my thought on Containers are available in public beta for simple, global, and programmable compute I’ve been learning a lot just about basic web-development as I work on my blog. I’m not actively learning the ins and outs to be honest - AI is both helpful and harmful in this regard for me I think - but in that knowledge-gathering and experience-gaining I’ve gotten my head around deploying a static site to a simple web server and how that’s different than deploying a simple container with a backend. I use cloudflare for my DNS already, and I have an app or 2 on fly - but depending on the IaC support for container deployment that are now available with cloudflare I may look to switch… I suppose I should do a little PoC first, and so this thought will be a reminder to take a stab at it Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. Note Here’s my thought on Notes – 06:11 Sun 22 Jun 2025 – David Bushell – Web Dev (UK) I see that most of the tech world, at least in public, leans left… which is fine. I think politically I’d have leaned left in the 90s/00s if I had been old enough to pay attention and understand. But the sold-out hatred for Elon and Trump is wild to me… Nothing makes the reality of propganda in 2025 more clear to me than the manufactured hate of 2 guys who the Left USED to love… I’m not like all in on either guy - but the politically driven hatred which has led to physical violence against both of these guys is insane…. Dave’s ending thought here “We’re entering a Misinformation Age” is funny to me… Misinformation has been around forever - the CIA has admitted to an absolutely hilarious amount of things that over the years the government (US Government) had denied and the news had been complicit in covering up - right up until it was just undeniable and finally “ok ya everyone we did do that mind control experiment - BUT WE’LL NEVER DO IT AGAIN”… “ok ya everyone we did know the Taliban has been on the receiving end of millions of US dollars every year but don’t worry about it”… But for everyone to NOW get all up in arms over 2 guys the news will not shut up about, is just comically out of touch with history to me… Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. I tried n8n a while ago with 1 use case, it didn’t work but times have changed and whatever was wrong for that use case is now just fixed with a few updates… so I’m strongly considering n8n as a platform I build my workflows on, and using telegram as a simple entry-point into workflow execution is kind of intriguing… imagine sending a message to telegram to generate an image with SD based on a picture you took with our phone, maybe do something else with that image (turn it into a qr code or something), and then email it? all with a text message and pic? that sounds pretty cool… not sure what I"ll have spun up but I am excited to be making some progress on the automation ideas Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. Note Here’s my thought on Microsoft planning thousands of job cuts aimed at salespeople, Bloomberg News reports | Reuters more cuts for the sake of AI investment… this is getting out of hand. I’m thankful that I don’t work in a field that will be overtaken by AI in the sense of losing my job (I mean we’re like 47 months into AI will end dev jobs tomorrow) - of course I have to learn about the tools and LLMs have increased my output in many ways. Note Here’s my thought on microsandbox/microsandbox: Self-Hosted Plaform for Secure Execution of Untrusted User/AI Code There’s a ton of AI related tools I want to play with, and there are several I run in docker pretty willy nilly. However, the MCP server stuff as of late has felt fast and borderline reckless so I like seeing a project seeking to make it easy to sandbox code… I get blocked by this idea cause I’ll want to setup a VM on a VLAN or something before just spinning up an mcp server idk if I should trust - but if I can do it with a library then that’s amazing! Note Here’s my thought on Normal boyhood is ADHD I may want to write a longer post about this or just capture some quick thoughts but I appreciate DHH’s take here…. ADHD diagnosis is an epidemic… Humans are different and I think we should seek to build society that makes space for differences, rather than medicating everyone into more or less the same robotic blog to work and pay taxes. However I came across this post on another platform with commenting, and most of the commentators were upset with the post saying things like “tell me you have no idea what ADHD is without telling me” and long explanation of honestly regurgitated talking points from a very pro-pharma worldview position… it’s kind of a chicken or egg thing to me - because you don’t have to be a doctor to read and do your own research, and to “just trust the experts” is the most unscientific saying in history… but the folks criticizing this post claiming DHH is speaking out of turn are taking JUST as arrogant approach to ADHD or mental health, only they put more faith in a medical community (which I’ve written about a little and am sus of due to the money), but they put ZERO faith in their own ability to think critically or observe patterns about the world… Thanks DHH for the thoughts here, as a guy recently diagnosed with ADHD and Autism I’ve done my own reflection and simply agree with a lot of what he puts down here Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. 💭 The Meaning of “Mammon” in the Bible | Matthew 6:24
Note Here’s my thought on The Meaning of “Mammon” in the Bible | Matthew 6:24 I spend a fair amount of time thinking about the future, planning and saving, making sure to the best of my ability and capability right now, that my family is financially taken care of for my whole life and beyond. It’s a challenging thing to wrestle with building wealth while understanding Jesus’ call to live a life focused on others and Heaven. He certainly never says having wealth is bad or sinful, but the point in this short 1 minute video on mammon was good for me be encouraged by. Mammon (or stuff, possessions, etc) has the tendency to lead people astray into trusting in it… how many times to people straight up freak out when the stock market dips? But using mammon to care for others is one of the points of Christian living. God has been good to me, and as we seek to be good to others I pray we (my family and I) are bringing glory to his name and not doing anything for our own vanity Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. Note Here’s my thought on N.T. Wright on The Unseen Realm & Heiser - YouTube I don’t write enough short thoughts on theology stuff, I’m usually trying to have some longer thought to unpack or to summarize a longer teaching. I came across this video this morning after a Bible Project video - I love Michael Heiser, he’s given me such a strong framework for understanding the Bible, and now to see an example of NT Wright talking about him and some of those ideas is really exciting. Wright nails it around 9 minutes in - that the primary point of the supremacy of Jesus, and his victory over the ruling powers from Deut 32, is a great short truth that more Christians needs to learn… Jesus doesn’t magically your life better, he invites you to submit to his authority rather than the authority of the present ruling forces, and yes this does make your life better but only if you are truly submissive to him can you understand “better” appropriately. 💭 SearXNG | Open WebUI
Note Here’s my thought on SearXNG | Open WebUI I’ve been meaning to set searxng for a while - it comes out of the box with khoj but I want an instance for open-webui as I get serious about deciding on a self-hosted AI tool-chain solution. It look like the setup for open-webui is a touch more than “docker compose up” so it’ll take probably 15-20 minutes of dedicated time to try this out Note This is one of [[ my-thoughts ]]. Note Here’s my thought on memory - Check which processes are eating swap on Linux? - Super User I often max my swap on all my machines, and I still have no idea what I’m dong different than anyone else. But using top I guess it’s easy to see swap usage by process after adding it to the menu by hitting f, finding SWAP, then hit space and the right arrow key to move it to a convenient spot in the column order… Helped me see that I had 1 python process using over a full GeeBee of swap today! 💭 🏡 Home | Open WebUI
Note Here’s my thought on 🏡 Home | Open WebUI I’ve been using openwebui at home, mostly with llama3.2, to do some basic things - meal planning and short script generation. One thing I want to do is generate shrotened versions of my favorite books to read to my kids. For example, the Narnia series. It’s already a kid’s book, but a 3 year old can’t stay focused for even a whole chapter. I’d love for AI to shorten up the narrative to keep the jist of the story but in about 1000 words or so… I haven’t gotten it perfect, but openwebui lets me upload documents (for example, a pdf of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and then use that for context… It’s not quite RAG I don’t think, and that’s on the list of ideas to play with to this end.
