PC Crash #

Desktop crashed days ago, apparently my primary drive has been going bad for a while and eventually it just died.

Easter 2026
Data Loading is a Huge Deal
I have several competing streams of thought about Easter this year, I want to focus some reflection and energy in the appropriate direction, of what Easter is as a holiday in the Christian calendar, the day my Lord and King defeated Death in his physical body and resurrected himself from the grave - Easter 2026. It is in how holy and significant that this day is that my second stream of thought begins to compete… we profane it so much in America, maybe throughout the world, but I’m really thinking about my family-experience with Easter and other holidays… So I’ve got thoughts for the world there too

Stream 2 #

I want my wife and daughters to participate with me in celebrating Lent, Holy Week, and Easter with more reverance, but the problem is our own parents treating Easter and other High Church holidays that have been Americanized, as though they own those days for “family time”. The point isn’t to spend time with family, it is to observe a holy day and after this year I am about ready to reserve all holidays for ourselves. If grandparents want to come see their grandkids, they’re welcome anytime - heck we live 15 minutes away in on case and still the competition happens over a few select holidays. Well, perhaps no more. I think I’m going to block Easter and Christmas out for my family and we will participate in traditions that are more meaningful than sharing social media links while we all sit on our phones in the living room.

Resurrected my OpenRouter API key for opencode after seeing a note aout Qwen3.6 Plus being free so I figured I’d give it a go. I think with some pushing I can use Nexus to get a lot done with free models as they change and get better. Maybe even self-hosted models in the coming years!

Good Friday #

It’s Good Friday for the Christians in the world, a day named not for what happened but for a person. Jesus went to the cross some-2000 years ago out of his love for his people. If you are chosen by the Lord, today is a good day because his love was demonstrated for you in spilling his blood as the atonement for your and my sins. That blood covers us just like the sacrifice of Leviticus 16’s blood was sprinkled on the holy things. Jesus’ blood is sprinkled on us, as the temple, protecting the sacred space so that the Holy Spirit can indwell. It’s Ancient Near Eastern theology 101: wherever a god dwells must be cleansed, but the manner of the cleansing in Christianity is unique - God became man and died to provide the cleansing, his requirement of you and me is to answer his call, not work to cleanse the space. Praise the Lord the work is out of my hands.

had MiniMax help me craft a project page for Nexus finally. I’ll probably use AI to keep it up to date. It’s really biting at a boundary I was setting for having AI “produce” any writing on my website, but it feels appropriate as long as I’m reviewing those updates for consistency and ensuring it isn’t slop. The point isn’t a blog post there, it’s keying into an idea I have for my blog of having project-specific pages that just introduce why I built something and what it is - might end up being very close to just the READMEs of those projects.

Reflection #

It’s the middle of holy week and my note from yesterday feels like it was months ago… The days are getting long again, and filled with some panic about work. I think I’ll find it silly how stressed I am eventually, I was just thinking “when I get to Heaven, Jesus sure will think how much I got worked up about work is silly”, but if he’ll think it then he thinks it now, if the perspective would be true in however many years I have left or before his second-coming, then the perspective is true today.

I’m not sure how to have the right perspective when the tightness in my chest is out of my control. I can breath deep and recognize a truth - my job is fleeting and the irony that my job is taking so much of my mental energy through today “Silent Wednesday” (a day also known as “Spy Wednesday” for reflecting on Judas’s betrayal) is in the betrayal of my thoughts about my savior, or lack-there-of. Judas sold the Lord for some silver, I’m sure as a man he had his reasons like any junkie rationalizing their behavior… But am I different? I’m so consumed with panic and worry about things happening at work that my mind is not on who my Savior is, just like Judas I’m fretting about the wrong things and whether it’s like Judas or not, I can’t seem to “just let it go”.

What if Judas had just let go of his greed? Would he have been saved? In the sovereignty of God it never was the case that Jesus wouldn’t be betrayed, that was apart of a plan known before time, but from the perspective of a man bound by time I can’t help but ask it - could Judas have relinquished his sin to Jesus and is my anxiety over my job a modern-day betrayal whose irony is simply made more clear by struggling with it on Silent Wednesday.

Ending the day OK… I’m taking a machete through Forge, my project at work, and that feels great. Something happened today where a lot more things fell into place about my role and what I’m supposed to be doing and how I will end up doing it. After sitting in the context for a few months, I’m seeing a bigger picture unfold about what Forge will be, but today I realized it was going in the wrong direction and so even with other people on this project I ripped out about 10k lines of code and will force push to master in the morning. Copilot was very useful in fully removing concepts and even service deployments (LakeFS this time around) to help me minimize the code and logic surface that Forge takes up. It’s calming me down a bit and I expect will make it easy to move fast and solve problems in silly ways while we figure out the better ways to solve them. So some peace feels like it’s on the horizon.

It’s holy week and I barely know about it cause work is just taking up so much time… I really hate this but I don’t think I can just blame work. I am to blame, I have so many short comings and I’m not actively doing a lot about them, I’m just trying to mitigate them with AI. I’m trying to learn the problem space and solve problems how I used to: only faster, but there’s a lot of other people, competing priorities, limited hardware to test out ideas, and it’s a very heavy cognitive burden… Unfortunately I’m giving in and letting it take over, perhaps today the Lord will soften my mind towards work and give me an more appropriate level of care and help me to meditate on things that are true, pure, noble, and worthy of my full attention.

Back to normal life #

We’re back from vacation, Florida was nice but a few thorns on the rose of vacation include:

several days of rain (but we got a blizzard up north, so beggars can’t be choosers)
I was so pre-occupied with work the entire time that I barely got a few minutes of relaxation the entire time

In dev news, it’s time to get a few things done today for the homelab, I’m going to audit my docker compose setup and work towards upgrading things that are horribly out of date and cleaning up my scattered stacks with the goal of hopefully eventaully migrating some things to kubernetes and using cloudflare tunnels in place of keeping 80/443 open on my firewall for traefik ingress.

Happy Saturday, we’re at the GWL and I figured I’d take a few minutes this morning to reflect on the last few weeks

Work #

Cat Autonomy is going well for me, my team seems relatively pleased with the work and ideas I’ve brought to the table, and I’ve played a role in some pretty instrumntal changes. I have been piecing together more and more of a story, I’m not sure about Caterpillar specifically but maybe, about technical leadership and how a lack of it at the top level (C-suite, Execs, etc.) leads to long-lasting frustration and repetitive pain points at lower levels (ie. where I am). The reasons that I needed to make, or propose, all the changes I have is that a lack of leadreship has culminated over years into a sprawling mess of responsibilities, requests, deliverables, and a lack of a cohesive “thing” which was the original vision for the project I’m on now (I know this cause I was here when it started).

Agents #

Agents are making it possible for me to to produce the amount of work I have been for the last 2 months. It feels like the future in many ways, a lot is unknown still but I need a write a follow-up on Learning How To Agent. I’m not sure where I sit in agentic coding skills in the scope of the world, but at Caterpillar I am within episolon of 100% confident that I’m one of the most active and proficient agentic-tool-users (Specifically GitHub Copilot, but I am including peripheral things here - knowledge of context management, custom agents, harness engineering, etc). Nexus has been serving me really well and that is about to warrant its own post too - I have had a few Caterpillar peeps reach out about using Nexus for themselves and although it’s not there yet, it is coming together nicely.

Over the last 6 weeks I’ve come up with a platform idea, and stitched together/upgraded several existing solutions from the past 5 years, into a platform I’m calling “Forge”. For the past 2 years there’s been an internal effort to rebuild what I just recently consolidated, but that project has no users and is unstable AF… Just this week our leadership decided to ax taht project and put those developers on my thing. I’ve been struggling with this a little because I don’t like to think that I have so much weight at Cat now as to meaningfully affect the work othe rpeople are doing. I like to build tools to affect how people work, but in this case I effecitvely killed a 2 year old project and there’s more than 0 emotions to deal wtih. Overall the team doesn’t seem too bent out of shape about it, but nonetheless the influence I see that I have, and it’s continuing to increase, is somewhat daunting

Misc #

At the Great Wold Lodge and having a blast, minus kids not sleeping great (which unfortunately makes having fun sometimes a near-breakdown-experience). We’re hanging out with tbe BFFs and my best mate has recently become a Lead in his engineering firm. Proud of him for sure. I also am feeling acutely aware of a fact - that things change over time, and influence has lasting impacts.

taking a look at the zensical docs builds broken in my homelab
- I pulled the forgejo runner image to build locally - but that image isn’t used for building, just orchestrating the CI runs
- so I docker pull ghcr.io/catthehacker/ubuntu:act-latest
  - installed just
  - cloned repo
  - just build-site works… wtf…
TLDR

The build was failing because Linux only allowed 128 inotify instances, and zensical starts its file-watcher even during a normal build. The watcher creates more than 128 inotify instances, hits the kernel limit, gets EMFILE (Too many open files), and then panics due to an unwrap(). This had nothing to do with: ulimit -n (already high) max_user_watches (already high) PID limits Raising: /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_instances fixed it immediately. In short: CI environment had a low inotify instance limit, and zensical’s watcher is not CI-safe.
Increase inotify limit in your CI workers
Also got my blog build and push to GH much closer to my shared devops one…

FINALLY setup something closer to a tiling window manager at home… Using Aurora still, kind of thinking about a switch there too, but I found KZones which is like WindowsFancyZones which is close enough for me for now… I don’t move windows around a ton at home and the little I do I don’t mind using a mouse to snap into place
- Also saw Fluid Tle which I considered and may try out after I get some tiling done on Mac with AeroSpace
Aerospace is configured on my Mac, dotfiles updated in forgejo… feels awesome to have some simple tiling and navigation

Keys #

super + {1-9} for switching workspaces
- on Aurora at home I have this for virtual desktops… the difference is that virtual desktops contain both monitors whereas workspaces in aerospace are assigned a monitor - which I prefer
super + shift + {1-9} assigns a window to that workspace and sends it there
- don’t have this at home, I use way more browser windows at home than work so I’ll just plan to mouse around the KZones when I’m getting setup and keyboard nav from there
there’s a few things for full screen and swapping focus and stuff… all in all very basic but a clean experience

Quick Thought #

Something I"ve noticed about myself recently is how naturally try to exploit systems. I don’t mean in a nefarious way or anything, but as I think about Thinking In Diagrams I’m sort of always drawing out a system in my head thinking about ways to shim information or workflows into parts of that system. I feel like there’s gotta be a name for this pattern of thinking but it was just something that came to my mind last night. For example I’m building a notifications service right now and I have several ideas I think I could build on top of it - so while I’m trying to plan for those future ideas I basically try to construct the base framework layer in such a way that I can take advantage of different entrypoints to the data model as a way to “exploit” the larger system for a more specific use case. MAybe you’d just refer to this as planning ahead, but it feels in my inner-being a little more scrappy than that. As I’ve built “distrbuted” systems over the years (mostly like CI/CD, not large systems of scale to be honest) I notice I’m always planning a spot to “hook into” whatever thing I’m building. I don’t know where this thought might go, perhaps nowhere, but maybe there’s something to systems-design and thinking in this way of being sensitive to exploit paths (though again, not necessarily nefarious, just as a way to add features to a system).

I was thinking it might be nice on my blog to have a couple facelifts:

- point is, I’m using open-webui as my LLM provider, and idk what it is but something had to click into place about where that fits with the doofy things I want to build at home

Discussed with Andrew the discomfort I felt this morning reading Spurgeon’s reflection on Hosea 14:8
- The basic takeaways from that are commentary and reflection are different, and reflection isn’t expository teaching
- I have a significant sensitivity to putting thoughts on the Bible out there for people to misinterpret, I blog here but hopefully no one comes to any of my posts with “Reflection” in the title and expects theological education…
- So this is a good thing to think about, or just be aware of in future conversations - “devotional” is a very common word in Christian circles but this morning it became clear that I have had a slightly different definition than perhaps most of my Christian counterparts (not that my understanding was correct - in fact it became clear this morning that it isn’t)
- Overall though, by God’s grace, his Word does speak to people differently, and although we should exercise caution with any application, I cannot deny that God speaks to others in ways that he doesn’t speak to me, and praise God he loves us enough to reach out in ways appropriate for each individual

started chatting with jipity about some automation… I have so many ideas that circle my head and I have a hard time implementing anything for fear of committing halfway to something…
I think I can take baby steps to mitigate that issue and one way is to automate the first thing that annoys me - zfs dataset creation for new apps. I assume that I want a new zfs dataset if I’m going to provision something into my homelab so that means
- dataset creation on the appropriate node
- permissions
- updates to zfs-ops (eventually dataops in homelab-mono) for the backup to be added explicitly (or removed if I’m removing one - for example some old VM datasets I no longer need)
I also mind-dumped after starting the convo with jipity, using speakr to get a short summary of a brain dump is pretty awesome especially considering the purely local self-hosted nature. Here’s the summary of a pretty concentrated 6 minute monologue on things I’m thinking about:
- Summary is imperfect - but again, for self-hosted hardware and getting purely private LLM-assisted brainstorming is really cool. However, I do plan on sinking some thought into the big boys (claude or jippity) as I very slowly begin construction

Key Issues Discussed

Platform and service idea for consulting
Product as an opinionated home lab targeting small teams or on-prem setups with Docker Swarm + ZFS
Focus on privacy, data ownership, compute ownership while providing cloud options (AWS)
Hardware recommendations part of services
Use AWS resources when possible but self-hosting is also viable option
Tail scale for business networking and network ACLs provided by the vendor

Key Decisions Made

Deploy servers using Docker Swarm + ZFS with an opinionated approach to data management, backups, application deployment monitoring.
Cloud options include Terraform set up in AWS (and possibly Azure later)
Use U-Corps as a base for containers on top of Ubuntu distro box; consider KeyCloak or Aphalia for authentication
DNS and public services will be handled with NameCheap and Cloudflare using Terraform, not picking each other’s features.

I’ve lost a lot of my terminal workflow since picking up more work in kubernetes and terraform, mostly because of the work patterns of those around me and the slight differences between my dev machines… but I’ve dealt with it for too long. The first step to recovering some of my speed with file management specifically is to get a terminal file manager figured out.
finder is the WORST file explorer on the planet and I use a Mac daily so it has to end
superfile looks nice, but I could immediately even get “go bacK” to work with their vim keybindings, so I’m out
trying yazi now…

- I cloned that to ~/.config/yazi/flavors/ and then was able to just use their few canned ones easily in ~/.config/yazi/theme.toml

I tried to setup showing hidden files in the config file but it didn’t seem to work… but just hitting . in the tui showed my hidden files just fine

right now I’m trying to move all my homelab stuff to a mono-repo, so terminal file management makes that easier
- I think I have to take down each compose stack to move it from .../homelab-compose to .../homelab-mono/<something else> which is annoying because I don’t have a way to take all the compose stacks down and up yet… could make a simple custom config for it? ugh…

I’m migrating my homelab stuff to its own repo called homelab-mono

starting with the restic stuff going into a dataops folder
will move homelab-compose to there eventually
restic is backing up ok I think, but I want just recipes for quickly checking the health and so I’m working on that with windsurf right now
I started working on gotify cli for notifying me of nextcloud uploads and it’s got me thinking that I was going to be using temporal for this kind of stuff… how far out to I branch out at home?

I’m struggling with some homelab setup… Between Using restic to backup my home directory and building my blog with temporal (oh and Shotput which pushes images to my images.pype.dev repo ) I’m finding that I need an ssh key in a container… My restic backup uses my ssh key and runs out of my dotfiles repo right now. But I need to think about a way to generate or share a restricted user’s keypair with a container or many containers for homelab use…

- should be github for images.pype.dev because statically.io works well specifically with github

This is where something like vault would come in handy… a central place to store these types of credentials. But I suppose I could hack something up on a zfs dataset… I could generate a key pair for a user in my lab, or even me but with restricted permissions, and then put that in /tank/encrypted/docker/something-zfs and then use that as a host mount into any containers that need a key? -v /tank/enctyped/docker/something-zfs:/home/appuser/.ssh something like that…

Playing in Waupaca volleyball tournament
Saw news about OpenAI Windsurf deal falling through
Started setting up affine to try a self-hosted option for mind mapping… draw.io is ok, excalidraw is ok, but I feel like for mind mapping there’s gotta be a better tool than what I’d use for infra diagrams… maybe not, but affine looks interesting to at least spin up nonetheless and thankfully it’s just docker compose up

You have to go to <affine-url>/admin for the admin setup, and from there there is no link to the root page where you can see the workspaces… good to note

WHY #

One of the things that comes up in my mind every now and then is a way to map out BJJ flows… like given position A start a flow chart based on opponent decisions. Or flow charts of execution steps of passes or things like that…

Needing the mind map feels similar to linking my posts together, but it’s like more detailed - I need a lot of space for many different ideas, whereas with text notes pretty much all the space is given to one note (or one link in all the map).

I also think in diagrams a lot - see Thinking In Diagrams and so having a nice place to keep all my diagrams has felt like a dream. I go back and forth with draw.io and excalidraw for various things both personal and work, and I just don’t know how to pick one over the other. So maybe moving to a different style of platform with Affine (which is Notion-esq) will help me organize the mind maps in a meaningful way

I am continuing to work on my dev experience a little bit… it’s been a long time since I got into it but I’m very spread out now so I need to get some minimized commmonization going across my environments:

3 computers
2.5 editors: neovim, vs code, vs code + roo, windsurf
scattered blogging utilities (links, graphs, etc)

So I’m using LLMs to help me clean up dotfiles, and then I’ll probably try to get my keymaps from tmux working in windsurf… they work in vs code OK, i probably have a few pain points, but when I’m in windsurf, although that’s mostly the AI writing code, I need to edit things sometimes and my vim keymaps are all messed up. I usually open the file in neovim to make the edit but it’d be nice to stay in whichever tool I’m in for the task I’m working on

Thoughts To Nostr is coming along great, I have the oldest thoughts being posted via temporal workflow and activities now

I still want to clean up my dotfiles a bit and hone in on the vs code and windsurf keymaps issues… plus a few settings issues with git and the project manager extension

Organization #

zfs-ops is in pypeaday github… should it be in doomlab7 with everything else? I kind of want a monorepo just so I can quit thinking about where to put stuff…

for example I have zfs-ops for zfs related things, but now I’m gonna use restic to backup from my desktop… so does that go in zfs-ops cause it’s really more about backups? or shoudl that stay only for zfs things and put this restic/docker backup somewhere else… either a new repo or start a monorepo for all my homelab stuff…

Today I consolidated homelab-social-media-pipelines into homelab-temporal, which is the app repo.

I am tracking this stuff in a kanboard ticket and also Thoughts To Nostr

I also touched on my [[homelab-monitoring-agent]] bys witching to atomic-agents, but windsurf is struggling with it

Worked on backup of my desktop - in dotfiles I have nas-back which will be a compose stack I can move to homelab-compose that uses restic to backup files via stp/ssh - seems easy enough to setup Using restic to backup my home directory
