Advent - Psalm 130:7

Advent - Psalm 130:7

Psalm 130:7 O Israel, wait for Yahweh. For with Yahweh there is loyal love, and with him there is abundant redemption. He-sed # Yahweh’s is (he-sed)… It comes from Exodus 34 Exodus 34:6-7 6 And Yahweh passed over before him, and he proclaimed, “Yahweh, Yahweh, God, who is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding with loyal love and faithfulness, 7 keeping loyal love to the thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and he does not leave utterly unpunished, punishing the guilt of fathers on sons and on sons of sons on third and fourth generations.” love is undying, unending, enduring, and everlasting. Yahweh’s love for his people isn’t a function of their love or loyalty to him - he is loyal to himself and in that loyalty he is faithful to me God’s abundant redemption, as an artifact of his hesed love for me, is my daily bread. Every morning, with various amount of devotion, do I sit down and reflect on Jesus’s goodness to me… Of course I pray the blessings…
Advent - Psalm 39:7

Advent - Psalm 39:7

Psalm 39:7 And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is for you. Every Advent I wish I took it more seriously - each year trying to be slightly more diligent about traditions and raising our daughters to understand more than the material-driven “holiday season”. This year has had some ups and downs, ultimately God has been faithful to me in amazing ways. And if he hadn’t blessed me in the ways he has, he’d still be faithful. My hope is for Yahweh to save
Advent - Isaiah 8:17

Advent - Isaiah 8:17

Isaiah 8:17 And I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will await him. -> this isn’t “waiting” like being patient… The first “wait” is, but the second “wait” isn’t the same word. Seems like a few English translations are pick something along the lines of patience rather than expectation here… I’m not an expert, but I do think is a better translation - part of that influence is that it’s the first day’s reflection from this BP Advent Calendar and this first week of Advent is about “Hope”. “Hoping” isn’t just being patient - it’s expecting what you are being patient, it’s longing for that thing to come, it’s excited anticipation. I’m in a short season of stress and waiting - but waiting for things that I don’t really want to happen, to happen… I pray in the Advent season Jesus will keep my thoughts and hopes on him and not on the circumstances that are just as imminent as His coming, albeit probably sooner.

Reflection - Ecclesiastes 9:10

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything. Reflection vs Hermeneutics I put this little disclaimer on posts where I’m sure the direction of my reflection isn’t necessarily consistent with a exegetical teachin gon the passage I’m reflecting on. I do not know the intimate context of Ecclesiastes 9 and so this reflection in very inra-personal and is not meant to be a point in teaching in any capacity Finding # Whatever your hand finds to do … The beginning assumes a search. The faithful Christian is not idle… he seeks to do good because it’s God’s calling on the human life to steward creation well which requires work. Finding doesn’t only presume a search, it indicates finding things on the search… There is no shortage of godly things to do because every single day we’re faced with choices that either align or don’t with the will Yahweh. So whatever my hand does in fact…

Reflection - Psalm 93

Yahweh is king Psalm 93 93 Yahweh is king; he clothes himself with majesty. Yahweh clothes himself; he girds himself with might. Yes, the world is established so that it will not be moved. 2 Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting. 3 The rivers have lifted up, O Yahweh; the rivers have lifted up their ⌊rumbling⌋; the rivers have lifted up their pounding. 4 Mightier than the rumblings of many waters, mightier than the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty. 5 Your testimonies are fully reliable. Holiness is fitting for your house, O Yahweh, ⌊forever⌋. Observations # Yahweh is king; he clothes himself with majesty. Yahweh clothes himself; he girds himself with might. It seems relevant to focus on Yahweh, the king, clothing himself. He has partners, humans, and ceremonial guardians in the spiritual realm (cherubim, seraphim, etc) and yet he clothes himself. His court doesn’t clothe him - they praise him certainly, but no one puts on Yahweh’s kingly a…
By God’s Grace

By God’s Grace

Style This blog was fully orated and transcribed. I edited the transcript with some links and formatting Okay, so I had this thought about, honestly, just like what I would say. If somebody asked me, why do I say the phrase “by God’s grace” so often? And it’s related to a thought I had a while back where my best friend would, where Michael would say, “praise God”, out of like forced habit. And it developed into a great point of spiritual maturity to say by reflex “praise God” in you know our slightly older age here, in our young parenthood. And so it’s really related to that - I also say “by God’s grace” a lot and why do I say that? I think it’s related to these central themes that have been a part of my reflections of freedom but freedom to what? It is freedom to love Jesus - see Helkyo - What is it for God to draw man to him? And before that, I’m not free at all. Danger I’m just bound by sin. And that paired with believing loyalty and the choices I make every day - And I’m free to ma…
Reflection - Go Forward - Only Thing To Do

Reflection - Go Forward - Only Thing To Do

Reflection # Today I am thinking about the blessings in my life… In my opinion, I have a lot going for me - God has been so utterly good to me that finding fault with anything that was outside my control feels near-sinful… In my adult life I have a reached several “checkpoints of success” for lack of a better stupid word… smokin’ hot wife that loves Jesus 2 beautiful daughters stable work that I’m also good at by all accounts - excellent physical health by all accounts - very decent mental health (more on this later) a house, food, water, and the means to do recreation So, it’s very clear that God has been very good to me - and at the same time it’s probably wrong to give the impression that there was no sacrifice, pain, or affliction in my life so far… Here’s what’s on my mind - I kind of think God has given me so much in my adult life as a byproduct of my childhood. This note will not be full of gory details, but here’s one I find comical (though my wife finds it sad… you be the judg…
Deuteronomy 6 and the Shema

Deuteronomy 6 and the Shema

The Shema from Judaism, archived in Deuteronomy 6, is a pinnacle tradition in Hebrew Judaism, and should be in Christianity. I cannot claim to be an expert, but it’s one of the fundamentals - shema means to listen AND obey, and this was the primary charge given to God’s people. His people were also to repeat his commandments, make them apart of their lives, and introduce their children to the Laws of God so that the next generation may not lose sight of God’s oracles and truths. The Shema Deuteronomy 6:4–5 (LEB): 4 “Hear, Israel, Yahweh our God, Yahweh is unique. 5 And you shall love Yahweh your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your might. My Kids # I talk with my kids about obedience a lot… and it’s fine, because they’re young kids in a stage of life of needing near-constant correction. I love them and so because I love them they need to obey me, because no one in the world cares more about their safety and flourishing than I do, and no matter what…

Reflection - Psalm 9:1

Psalm 9:1 I will thank Yahweh with all my heart. I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. Praise God # The phrase “praise God” has become a common phrase in my life. I’m blessed to have my best friend, Michael, in my life after 15+ years. Back in high school, I forget how it came up, but he told me that anytime something good happens, he forces himself to just audibly say “praise God”. Jesus certainly quickened that to my heart, and it was again in high school that I witnessed some fruit of, not using the phrase, but practicing giving glory to God in the smaller moments. Some youth group kids were helping a church member replace their roof - so lots of high-schoolers tearing shingles off, hauling garbage, etc. As we were on the roof, one of the guys nearly fell off (we hadn’t even heard of “tie-offs” before). Something like a nail caught his shorts and he recovered his grip. I immediately said “Praise God”, and him and another guy looked at me and they go “…. ya! Praise God for sure!”…

Reflection - John 15:19

Spurgeon If Jesus undertook to bring me to glory, and if the Father promised that he would give me to the Son to be a part of the infinite reward of the travail of his soul; then, my soul, till God himself shall be unfaithful, till Jesus shall cease to be the truth, thou art safe. John 15:19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this reason the world hates you. The World # “Not of this world” was a clothing brand when I was a kid that made emo-styled clothing so edgy teens could be reminded to live a moral life. This was at least how I took the phrase “Not of this world” for most of my life… The phrase shouldn’t be trivialized. But as it was to me (not to blame that clothing brand) it turned one of the most freeing truths about Yahweh’s sovereignty into a list of do’s and don’t’s. It actually moralizes Jesus in pretty much the same way anyone does who brings him up when it’s convenient for the…
